When President Obama speaks abroad, I feel like he’s there to promote himself, and not the United States. I’m also given the impression that he feels that the United States is still a bigoted and oppressive nation.
It would be great if he understood that the role of a judge is to interpret law and apply only law to his or her decisions. Instead he wants a judge with “empathy” who takes into account understanding and life experience in his or her decisions. I could truly understand if he wanted this quality in a legislator, but he clearly prefers to have justices legislate from the bench.
When addressing the Muslim world today, Obama did touch on the role of women. He said that he doesn’t agree with the view in the west that a woman who chooses to cover her head is less equal. I believe that is the view in the Muslim world, where women are property and are stoned to death for leaving the house without a male relative.
The view in the West is that all people are equal. That’s why a bi-racial individual is able to become president, and a Puerto Rican woman can receive an ivy league education and go on to be appointed to the Supreme Court.
So… The president thinks we in the west think that a woman who covers her head is less equal, and then he appoints a judge who states that a Latina woman can make a better judgment than a white man. Thank you Mr. President. You make us look great abroad, and then appoint someone with views that say she’s better than me.
